Susan's Christmas wine recommendations - 1st December 2009

My top 3 reds for Christmas:

1. El Molino de Puelles, Rioja Alta (a definite favourite wine at the tastings I have done. Good with cold meats, beef and cheese)

2. Soluna Premium Malbec, Argentina (voted the top Fairtrade wine in 2008, this is rich and spicy - a great winter warmer and will match rich venison and duck casseroles)

3. Julien Schaal Merlot/Petit Verdot, Western Cape, South Africa (Decanter voted this Best New World Red in one of their issues and I love it. Good with roast beef and lamb). Here's a photo of Julien wishing us all a Merry Christmas!! -- >

My top 3 whites for Christmas:

1. Kono Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand (inexpensive, great flavours, good to have on hand. Lovely on its own or with smoked salmon, salads and chicken)

2. Soave Classico, Pieropan, Italy (really good and a great match to all manner of foods from nibbles to fish and poultry)

3. Julien Schaal Chardonnay, South Africa (the white twin of the red above, this is creamy and will be great with a turkey lunch)

For Champagne, we will definitely be having a bottle of Larmandier Bernier Blanc de Blancs!
