Silver award winner at the 2009 English & Welsh Wine of the Year Awards. This delicious pretty pink sparkling wine is made from Pinot Noir grapes left on the skins just long enough to pick up a rosy tinge and then fermented twice in the traditional method just like Champagne. This seriously is very very good with a delicately fruity nose and aromas of crushed English strawberries. Lovely mousse and flavours which linger in the mouth making it very moreish. Any excuse would do to open a bottle - simply enjoy it as the perfect summer apéritif or with Cornish seafood or for a romantic dinner. Ex-RAF pilot, Bob Lindo, planted grapes on his family sheep farm twenty years ago down in the Camel Valley near Bodmin in Cornwall. It was a brave move which is now paying dividends as the gold medals are showering down - not just for producing top English wine, but also for producing top sparkling wine to compete with Champagne!

We visited here in May 2009 and joined in with the Grand Vineyard Tour which takes place every Wednesday evening (£7.50 per person including a tasting). Word has certainly got around about Camel Valley as there were over 50 people there. Bob took us round and we also met his son Sam, who was the UK Vineyards Winemaker of the Year in 2007.

It is a sheltered, rolling valley and the vineyard is hidden away. If you cycle the Camel Trail from Padstow to Bodmin you ride right through it.

This sparkling wine is made in exactly the same way as Champagne. The grapes are crushed gently and fermented cool to retain the delicate fruit flavours. Yeast and sugar are added for the second fermentation and the bottles are then riddled, disgorged and recorked ready for us to enjoy.
