DescriptionA smooth, ripe organic Aussie Shiraz. Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family-owned wine-producer and this is its first organically produced wine. Made by Louisa Rose, it spends a couple of months in new American oak hogsheads from the family’s own cooperage. Unfined, it is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. More informationYalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around".
The grapes for this wine come from a vineyard close to the Murray River. In 2007 drought was a problem and resulted in very low yields. Meticulous hand detailed work in the vineyard ensured the grapes were in perfect condition when picked.
Fermented with indigenous yeast and made with little intervention by the winemaker, Louisa Rose.
The crafting of oak barrels is a proud tradition at Yalumba with a coopering history dating back to the turn of the 20th century. With its own on-site cooperage, Yalumba is the only winery in Australia, and one of a small and select group of wineries in the world, to enjoy this privilege.
