Adobe Reserva Carmenere, Colchagua, Chile - organic wine

Snail-hungry ducks!

Alvaro Espinoza

The winery is made from 'adobe' bricks made from mud and straw

Description

Carmenère is a grape variety that was brought over to Chile from France in the 1800s and it seems to do very well here (rather like Malbec does in Argentina). It has a herbal quality to the nose, a little like Cabernet Franc, and this wine has sweet strawberry and plummy notes and soft tannins, more reminiscent of Merlot on the palate. Very easy-drinking and great value. A good wine to have on hand for impromptu visitors! More information

Adobe is a range of wines produced by Viñedos Orgánicos Emiliana, one of the sole producers in Chile to use biodynamic practices.

In fact it was Alvaro Espinoza who was the first to introduce biodynamics to South America and he is viewed as something of a pioneer. He aims to increase biodiversity in the vineyard by planting cover crops, leaving corridors between vine blocks for plants and wild flowers to grow.

This also has the effect of attracting the pests away from the vines. The gravity-fed winery is made from natural materials, including 'adobe' a traditional brick made from mud and straw.
