Limney Horsmonden Dry White, Sussex, England - organic wine

Davenport vineyards in Sussex

Description

Taste this blind and you'd think you were in in the Loire drinking a lovely Sancerre or in New Zealand drinking Sauvignon Blanc! Very crisp, clean, gooseberry and flowers nose with good acidity and balance on the finish. Made principally from Ortega and Bacchus grapes with some Siegerrebe, Faberrebe and Huxelrebe. It's great to see England producing such excellent wines - and organic too!

More information

Davenport vineyards started planting in 1991 and currently has 10 acres in production with another eight being planted. The wines are in hot demand and consequently in short supply so another eight acres might not be enough!!

Use of herbicides was stopped in 1996 and mildew has been controlled by organic-permitted copper and sulphur sprays since 1998. In 2000 Will Davenport registered all the vineyards with the Soil Association. What Will is aiming for is a healthy, well-balanced soil and the story of how he achieved this is very interesting. See the website for more details: www.davenportvineyards.co.uk.

Will's view on pricing echoes our own, as he says "I believe that organic wine does not in fact gain much of a premium over conventional wines because most wines are priced according to their quality, not their status as organic. It is therefore essential to improve the wine's quality as part of the organic conversion, rather than to simply rely on the public to pay extra for the same product (with an organic label)."
