Manuel Pedro Guimaraens 6th generation David Guimaraens 550 litre pipes of port
|
DescriptionThis is a non-vintage 'reserve' port which has been wood-matured for an average of five years in the traditional 'pipes' holding 550 litres each. Lusciously fruity and rich, it is full of black, licquorice fruit and sweet, spicy character. A great treat with mature farmhouse cheeses and nuts. Or have a small glass after a meal instead of dessert - it doesn't have to be Christmas! If you would like to order any bottles please contact susan@ethicalwine.com as we still have some bottles remaining. More informationTerra Prima is one of the first ports using organic grapes and organic spirit. Fonseca-Guimaraens are one the most famous port houses, founded in 1822 by Manuel Pedro Guimaraens. The story goes that in the 'War of Two Brothers' Manuel was forced to flee Portugal hidden in an empty port-wine cask. He fled to the UK and until 1927 the company was run from here.
5th generation Bruce Guimaraens made the wine up until the 1992 vintage. He was quite a character - larger than life - to such an extent that in a tasting on Bristol's Glass Boat in the early 90s, the boat seemed to tip as he walked around! Nowadays it is his son David who has ably taken the reins.
Terra Prima has been years in the making. The grapes for this reserve port have been organically farmed since 1992 but the final key was to find a source of top quality organic fortifying spirit which would be approved by the Port Wine Institute.
