Old vines at Yalumba

Yalumba clocktower circa 1925

Winemaker Louisa Rose

Description

The wine is a pale gold with green hues. The aroma is intense white flowers - particularly honeysuckle and apricot nectar. The palate is rich and long, with citrus and tropical fruit flavours. This wine exhibits the typcial Viognier texture-silky, rich and luscious with a fresh finish.

More information

Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around".

The grapes for this wine come from a vineyard close to the Murray River. In 2007 drought was a problem and resulted in very low yields. Meticulous hand detailed work in the vineyard ensured the grapes were in perfect condition when picked.

Fermented with indigenous yeast and made with little intervention by the winemaker, Louisa Rose.
