A new arrival on our list, Kono is Maori owned and run and sustainably farmed. Not only great quality and value, it is also has an incredible story behind it. Click the link below to read more. The wine is pale with green hues and has scents of lemon and honeysuckle. Peach and a touch of lime zest come through on the palate opening out to include hints of gooseberry. Lip-smacking, full, dry finish. It would be great with steamed mussels, fishcakes or a chicken stirfry. Also perfect for picnics (if we ever get any more sun!). I know it's maybe a girl-thing, but I do love the label. It's clean and elegant and cool and calm. BUY KONO HERE I've been pretty busy lately. Yesterday I was at the House of Lords for the awards ceremony for the English Wine of the Year competition which I judged blind (with a few other Masters of Wine) last month. Quality has improved tremendously and you can get some really lovely English wines now. We only list a few but I'm pleased to say they all got awards: 2005 Limney Sparkling won Gold (pretty amazing for a certified organic English wine!), 2006 Camel Valley Brut Rose won Silver and so did the 2008 Camel Valley Atlantic Dry (we have the 2007 vintage), while the 2006 Camel Valley Brut and 2007 Limney Horsmonden both won Bronze. The sparkling wines are lovely to give as a gift. I was invited to Belgium too to do a tutored wine tasting and speak at a conference on Ethics and Wine. It was quite interesting to see that although organic sales are good there, Fairtrade is really lagging behind where we are in the UK. Enjoy the holidays and as the Maori proverb goes: Manaaki Whenua, Manaaki Tangata, Haere whakamua Susan McCraith MW Ethical Fine Wines - sustainable, organic, biodynamic and fairly-traded fine wines |
